MIRO BUILDERS receives two 2015 HOBI Awards for a Westport Home

Miro Builders Inc. of Westport, CT was presented with two prestigious HOBI Awards from the Home Builders Association of Connecticut at their annual awards dinner on November 10, 2015.   The HOBI’s (Home Building Industry Awards) are in recognition of building excellence.  The 2015 awards are for “Best Custom Home 6,000-7,000 square feet” and “Best Custom Home Kitchen.”  Miro Builders is a repeat honoree having received eleven HOBI awards in recent years.  In addition, Miro Builders projects have previously been recognized with five Westport Preservation Awards from the Westport Historic District Commission and by Architectural Digest as an Open Audition New York’s finest finalist.

This exquisite new custom home was constructed by Miro Builders Inc. J.P. Franzen Associates Architects, P.C. was the architects and Katie Eldh of Eldh Interiors was the designer. A close collective endeavor of all parties working along with the homeowner created the vision of elegant and effortless living for today’s complex world, the result was this contemporary farmhouse with a Northern California flow and feel. Clean lines, open spaces, a touch of asymmetry, and a collection of unlikely touches all combined to yield an extraordinary home that inspires and soothes all at once.

The home focuses on a few signature creative elements to create a home that feels open and airy yet grounded and intimate; fresh and contemporary, yet comfortable and inviting. It offers the perfect yin and yang duality that begets a truly incredible home.

An abundance of exterior glass doors, leading to wrap around covered porch areas with flowing six-inch IPE decking and a stunning patio all complete the intention of indoor-outdoor living. The roof subtly stands out with its silvering shingles highlighted by lead-coated copper gutters and flashing.  By combining these elements, form with function came together to achieve the client’s wishes while meeting the challenges of the rigorous Northeast climate.  The lot created yet another challenge with most of its surface sloping steeply over a mantle of ledge. The builder handsomely engineered flowing Moss Ledge retaining walls into the landscape, transforming the unsightly lot into an undulating topographical composition. A combined hedge of tiered Cherry Laurel and Skip Laurel borders the road, creating a beautiful privacy setting for the home. Finally, the driveway was blended into the landscape using oil and native crushed stone to maintain a natural organic feeling of understated sophistication.

Combining state of the art technologies such as radiant heat in the baths, a hydro-air HVAC system that includes a hi-efficiency boiler and ERV, complimented with spray foam insulation contributes to the comfort and eco sensitivity of the ongoing theme. The home opens to a bright and airy foyer with a beautiful, white, floating staircase featuring an understated yet elegant wrought iron balustrade topped with a mahogany handrail.  Adjacent to the staircase is a feature wall with simple molding to complement the overall aesthetic of the stairs.  Throughout the house, a color palette of muted tones with occasional pops of soft blues echoes an understated, almost Zen-like elegance at every turn. The great room ceiling is designed with a series of wrapped beams which conveniently disguise the concealed drapery tracks. For the floors, white oak, five-inch wood-stained in a deep, rich chocolate brown with an eco-friendly Rubio finish.

The kitchen is purely, a chef’s fantasy and a homeowner’s dream for entertainment.  Just off the entrance, the heart of the home is found with generous amounts of space.  The kitchen features Dolomite countertops and custom cabinetry, including custom fabricated polished chrome frames with glass fronts encasing lit glass shelving for the upper cabinets of the bar area, abundance of hi-end appliances, chic plumbing fixtures, built-in custom breakfast table, generous amounts of space including a second working kitchen is topped off with a modern flair.  The bar extends to either side of the large glass pocket doors that separate the dining room from the kitchen allowing for an unobstructed view of the gracious adjoining room.  The kitchen follows into great room and outdoor patio creating an open concept perfect entertaining and everyday living.
