MIRO BUILDERS receives two HOBI Awards for Westport Homes

Miro Builders Inc. of Westport, CT has been honored with two prestigious HOBI Awards for the second consecutive year from the Home Builders Association of Connecticut.  The 2009 awards are for “Best Custom Home 4,000-5,000 sq ft” and “Best Residential Remodel $1-$2 million.”  The prestigious HOBI’s (Home Building Industry Awards) recognizes excellence for the best in class in categories within the state of Connecticut.  The HOBI Awards were presented at the Home Builders Association Gala held November 10, 2009 in Southington, CT.

The award given to the “Best Custom Home 4,000-5,000 sq ft” for new home construction recognized Miro Builders’ ability in designing and building this graceful home by blending the understated elegance of an English Cottage with the modern day amenities and room sizes of today’s standards.  The charm and antique look of the home was created by incorporating beautiful selected hand hewn antique oak beams, random wide width quarter sawn character oak flooring, stunning historical factory globe pendant lights made of mouth blown glass, a combination of stucco and cedar exterior, custom Spanish cedar half round front door with garage doors to match, along with European style windows.  Friends and family of the homeowners who walk through this home frequently say “this house has the charm and coziness of an antique home but with the sophistication and pizzazz of being modern”. Given the level of detail of this project the clients appreciated that it was actually brought in under their budget.

Miro Builders was again honored with an award for the “Best Residential Remodel $1-$2 million”. This home is a unique Dutch Colonial featuring authentic post and beam construction designed in 1920 by noted New England architect Donald P. Hart.  The restoration, additions, and design were performed by Miro Builders.  This home presented difficult challenges in order to save it from demolition. The house was at risk to be demolished due to severe water and structural issues.  In order to save the house from demolition and preserve the main original house and remedy the water problem, a large portion of the foundation underneath the existing home was rebuilt and an elaborate waterproof system was installed.  Miro Builders demolished and replaced a series of additions which were not consistent with the original home’s architectural style. These were replaced with new additions matching the charm and architecture of the original main house. Additionally, the most important architectural details, such as the bell shaped gambrel design, the exposed post and beam construction, the beautiful fireplace, mantle and chimney, original wide plank oak flooring, and leaded glass windows and door were restored and preserved with some of these elements being incorporated into the new sections of the home.  The home was also outfitted with modern amenities, including green systems, and brought up to current code requirements while maintaining and restoring the important charm and elements of the original home. The Westport Connecticut Historic District Commission addtionally honored this home with their “Westport Historic Preservation Award” in September, 2009. This project was brought in under budget which again reflected Miro Builders’ ability as project managers to accurately and professionally budget and manage their jobs while minimizing surprises.

Miro Builders were consulted during the selection of both these properties to help determine the soundness of these investments. Don Miro, owner and president of Westport-based Miro Builders Inc, says that “historic preservation is so valuable to our community. Residents are attracted to Fairfield County for its charm, character, history, school systems and amenities, as well as its proximity to New York City. Many people fall in love with antique homes but lack the proper resources to get sound knowledgeable real estate investment advice and end up making poor choices. Where does one go to get comprehensive advice a realtor, an architect, a builder? Many clients want modern amenities along with the charm and character of an ‘antique classic’ but are often overwhelmed by budgetary miscalculations. There are many companies out there that will either tell potential clients what they want to hear or are naïve or inexperienced and just do not understand the full scope of what is involved”.  Miro goes on to say “ the main factors that lead to a good return on real estate investment are buying at the right price while anticipating a realistic budget for the anticipated, but even more importantly the unanticipated total costs and renovations which many companies and individuals lack the experience or the integrity to accurately advise their clients on. Sometimes it is wiser under certain circumstances to tear down and recreate a classic home with antique features along with the bells and whistles of today’s standards. A client should be aware of the possible outcomes and make their decisions based on a position of strength and knowledge not fragmented shots in the dark”.
